Embracing the rich history of downtown Porto, our architectural endeavor rejuvenates an aging factory, honoring its iconic granite stone blocks and existing courtyard configuration while ushering in a new era of residential functionality. By retaining the essence of the original structure, we repurpose its raw materials to integrate modern comforts seamlessly into the fabric of the past, keeping the stone as the outer surface and insulating walls with cork blocks from the inside. With a focus on community, our design incorporates shared access points and inviting patios, fostering a sense of belonging among residents. Add–ons, crafted from thermally modified wood and recycled steel, pay homage to the factory's heritage while enhancing its functionality for contemporary living. Patios and gardens intertwine throughout the space, infusing natural light and ventilation, solar gains, warmth, and lush greenery into each apartment. Our approach harmonizes heritage preservation with sustainable integration, offering a cohesive blend of history and modernity for an enriched urban experience in the heart of Porto's bustling landscape.
